DAY 26 | Essential Oil Shelf Life

  • Jul 6
  • 1 min read

Many people ask when buying essential oils:

How long can essential oils be stored? Will essential oils expire?

Actually, different types of essential oils have different shelf lives due to their different plant components. Generally speaking, healing essential oils do not expire, but citrus essential oils have a shorter shelf life, while tea tree and lavender essential oils are relatively stable.

Common Essential Oil Shelf-Life Reference

| Essential Oil Type | Shelf Life | Photosensitivity |

| Tea Tree | Approx. 8 years | ❌ None |

| Lavender | Approx. 6 years | ❌ None |

| Eucalyptus | Approx. 6 years | ❌ None |

| Peppermint | Approx. 5 years | ⚠️ Low |

| Rosemary | Approx. 4 years | ⚠️ Low |

| Bergamot | Approx. 2 years | ☀️ High |

| Sweet Orange | Approx. 1.5 years | ☀️ High |

| Lemon | Approx. 1 year | ☀️ High |

> Note: The above data is for reference only. Actual shelf life will vary depending on the quality of the essential oil, extraction method, and storage conditions.

Why do citrus essential oils have a shorter shelf life?

Citrus essential oils (such as lemon, sweet orange, and bergamot) are typically extracted from the peel using cold pressing. They contain a high proportion of natural terpenes, making them susceptible to oxidation from air, light, and high temperatures.

Therefore:

🍋 Use as soon as possible after opening.

🍊 Tightly close the cap immediately after use.

🌞 Avoid direct sunlight.
